WHAT
IS ‘LOW VISION’ and WHAT HELP IS AVAILABLE?
-
A person is said
to have low vision when their eyesight is limited or impaired and
cannot be adequately corrected with surgery, medicine, spectacles
or contact lenses.
-
Macular degeneration
causes blur or loss of vision in the centre of the vision. This typically
makes tasks such as reading, writing or recognizing faces difficult.
-
A complete low
vision assessment is essential to find the best aid or strategy to
help with such tasks.
-
The assessment
includes vision tests to determine what assistance best suits the
individual's requirements. It will also help to gain a better understanding
of the vision impairment and how to make the best use of the remaining
sight.
-
Advice will be
provided about magnifiers and other aids, glare control and lighting.
Ask your eye care professional
about low vision services and resources that may help you.
